FairPoint Communications (FPC), formerly known as MJD Communications, was founded in April 1998. FairPoint Communications Solutions Corp. (FPCS) was established as part of FPC, an ILEC holding company to provide CLEC services to small and medium-sized businesses in suburban and rural communities. FPC changed its name to reflect its move from an acquirer and operator of traditional telephone companies serving rural markets to a facilities-based integrated communications provider to small and medium-sized business customers in Tier Three and Tier Four markets. FPCS currently serves 120,000 CLEC customers.
FPC is pursuing an edge out strategy combined with aggressive acquisition of ILECs. The company owns 28 ILECs serving 22 states, and acquired four new ILECs with 81,000 customers in December 2000.
